Sunset Grill

11 September 2010
I was pretty excited to go Sunset Grill finally, after hearing loads about it's fiery signature buffalo wings. Driving into the deserted part of Singapore was an eye-opener. I remarked to my fellow passengers, "Wow, I never knew such place exists in Singapore. It feels like Malaysia."

When we reached, we saw a queue at the entrance but didn't notice a "closed" sign. We were then told by the waiter that they have closed the queue, which we were promptly disappointed. But after checking with his supervisor (I presume), he allowed us to join the queue, which we were very thankful for.

The restaurant has indoor and al fresco seating areas. We sat outside with rows of light overhead. The place is simply done up and has a rustic feel to it. We sat next to an airfield and the atmosphere was very relaxing.

Our first order arrived pretty soon.

Mushroom soup (about S$6)

This is a soup Jamie Olivier would approve. It's chunk full of mushrooms bits, definitely not lovingly strained and perfectly crafted. Like the way the place is run, it's down-to-earth, full of earthy and creamy goodness. I liked it a lot, for one it wasn't a Campbell version, and also it encourages second helpings. I also enjoyed the garlic butter baguette that came with it. It was crisp, light and flavouful.

 Chili Corne (about $15)

This was my order for the night, and yes I felt like a stuffed turkey in the end. I was curious about what it was and the description sounded good. It's basically comfort food - beans, minced beef, onion, cheese mixed in a tomato-based broth. I dipped the crisp baguette, scooped some of the mixture and bite a huge chunk off it. Mmmm...

Buffalo Wings - level 4 spiciness (a dozen at about $30)

The star of the show. The point of the meal. At level 4, it's stinging hot, but bearable for my family who are chilli padi-eaters. Any higher it will not be enjoyable anymore. I like it. It had a tinge of sourness, possibly from a tabasco-alike sauce. They were fried perfectly, with juices running when I cut into it. I don't eat chicken skin but I heard that it's crispy and good.

It's worth a second visit, only if there are available vehicles.
